African Canned Food Market Is Growing Rapidly, Chinese Products Are Popular
- Aug 16, 2018 -

African people have always had a soft spot for canned food. Affected by its convenience and long shelf life, the African canned food market is growing rapidly.

At the same time, due to the influence of Western culture, the eating habits of African people have changed, and Western culture has promoted the development of the market. Canned foods mainly include eight sub-categories: canned sauces, canned desserts, canned fish and seafood, canned fruits, canned meat, canned pasta, canned soup and canned vegetables. For example, Nigerians prefer canned tomato sauce, and Algerians have endless love for canned mushrooms...

However, as far as the overall processing capacity of canned foods in Africa is concerned, since the African food processing industry is still in the initial stage of development, the current canned foods sold in local supermarkets in Africa are mostly canned imports, including canned fruits, canned jams and canned aquatic products. Taking tomato sauce as an example, although Nigeria has a high tomato yield, due to the lack of processing capacity, ketchup still relies on a large amount of imports, and currently imports about 190,000 tons of tomato sauce per year.

According to the China-Africa Trade Research Center, in recent years, Chinese canned food has continued to enter Africa. For example, canned mushrooms are the star products of the canned market in Algeria.

It is understood that only canned mushrooms, the variety is very diverse, for African consumers to choose. It also includes gray/white oyster mushroom, eryngii mushroom, monkey mushroom, enoki mushroom, and big soccer mushroom. The tastes include flavor, salt and vinegar. Chinese canned mushrooms are favored by the Algerian people for their deliciousness, convenience and sanitation.

It is understood that due to the early entry into the market, at present, China's canned mushrooms in Algeria in North Africa already have a 70% market share, and the South African market also has a very large advantage.

African importers can order directly from Chinese producers. It is understood that a mushroom company in Shenzhen, China produces more than 40 kinds of canned mushrooms, all of which are produced and packaged using international standards. Nowadays, the canned export varieties in China have been developed from the original small cans of households to various canned products. The export scope has also developed from a few countries in Southeast Asia to Europe, Africa, the Middle East and other countries and regions.

In addition, for large-scale canned purchases, in addition to directly ordering to the manufacturers, they can also be purchased in the relevant food wholesale market. Most small and medium-sized cities in China have relevant food wholesale markets. Some African buyers also purchase the required items through relevant exhibitions, such as the South African International Food Show. Chinese canners value the show very much. Many well-known manufacturers have led the team to participate. Among them, exhibitors have said that the sales of canned mushrooms in South Africa have been good, and the sales volume in the past has been great. The food fair can learn more about the buyer's demand trends and concerns.

At present, Nanchong City's canned chicken and canned duck have successfully entered the market in Nigeria. Tianjin's canned sauces (especially canned tomato sauce), canned fish in Fujian, canned mushrooms in Shenzhen, etc. also have good performance in Africa. As the “canned capital of China”, the export of canned aquatic products to Nigeria increased by 293.5% in the first quarter of last year.

From the original side dishes and desserts to the high-end dishes on the dinners of some African countries, this transformation has enabled more and more Chinese canned enterprises to successfully enter Africa.
